In qualitative research, using the principles of Scholarship of teaching and Learning (SOTL), we investigate the effects of educational concepts on motivation and inspiration of students and academic skills, including critical thinking, creative problem solving, communication, and (multidisciplinary) collaboration. I believe that these concepts work best if synergy is created between teaching, scientific research, healthcare, and patients in benefit for society. To this end, we develop novel patient-centred educational concepts grounded in inquiry-based learning (learn by doing), inter/transdisciplinary learning (learn by collaboration), and challenge/research-based learning (learn via real world authentic cases), involving patients, researchers, medical doctors (learn with role-models). We foster student learning and training of academic skills, such as critical thinking, creative problem solving, (multidisciplinary) collaboration, and communication. My educational research and vision aim to enhance training of future T-shaped professionals that are equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve todays big challenges in healthcare in benefit for society. These aims fit within the UMC Utrecht focus areas Cancer and Immunity & Infection, and the UU strategic theme area Life Sciences. We use this molecular and cel biological knowledge to develop novel nanomedicines that mimic effector phase immunity to target cancer and viruses in humans. My lab is interested in the physiological relevance and molecular mechanisms by which granzymes attack tumor cells and virus-infected cells. In humans, cytotoxic granules contain five serine proteases called granzymes that induce cell death or block viral replication. Granule-exocytosis by cytotoxic lymphocytes (CTLs/NK cells) constitutes the main pathway for eliminating tumor cells and virus-infected cells. My biomedical research focusses on the effector immune response of cytotoxic cells and how the immune system can eliminate cancer cells or virus-infected cells. He was appointed professor of Biomedical Research-based Education at the faculty of Medicine in 2021. In 2019, Niels Bovenschen won the Outstanding Teacher Award of Utrecht University. He is examiner and coordinator of several (bio)medical educational programs and courses at the faculty of Medicine, Utrecht University. ![]() ![]() Niels focuses on multidisciplinary collaboration and facilitates students to work on real-world societally relevant problems in the healthcare domain. His mission is to engage undergraduate students in science by creating synergy between education, scientific research, and healthcare already at the early undergraduate level. Niels was appointed as Senior Fellow in 2017 and as Principal Fellow in 2020 at Utrecht University. He is in charge of the UMC Utrecht Pathology Research Laboratory and head of the Laboratory of Translational Immunology core facility Proteins. His research group now focuses on the effector immune response in eliminating tumor cells and virus-infected cells. In 2004, he moved to the department of Pathology at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). Niels Bovenschen studied Medical Biology at the Free University in Amsterdam and he obtained his PhD in 2003 at Sanquin Research (Amsterdam).
